TV Tuesday: Sanctuary

I can’t wait until October – the second season of Sanctuary premiers on Syfy channel! (ugh, I seriously hate “SyFy” – I still don’t understand why they thought that was a good name change)

I actually started watching on a whim – we have Netflix and they have an on-demand option you can use with your Xbox. I added it to the queue just because it was there, not really knowing what it was about. And wow, was I pleasantly surprised. What a quirky, offbeat kind of show! The characters start out pretty normal, they look like the usual types of characters you’d find in a sci-fi show – the reluctant doctor, the scientist, the muscle, the sidekick, but as the season goes on, I found there were so many layers to each one of them, so many details that made them well-rounded and believable. And made me care about them. It’s not really a comedy, but it has funny bits. It’s not a romance, but there’s some sexual tension between the characters. Overall it’s just a fun 1 hour ride.

And I love the premise. Dr. Helen Magnus is immortal (well, at least really long lived) – created by drinking the blood of a vampire. She and the other Five (who include Jack the Ripper and Nicola Tesla) made it their life’s work to push the boundaries of science. And now she’s created a sanctuary for the other “Abnormals” in the world. It’s very cleverly written, with little in-jokes and a genuine sense of responsibility and caring for these beings that aren’t quite like the rest of the world.

I love mythology and history, and they delve quite deeply into each during their episodes. One was about the Morrigan – a trio of Celtic Goddesses, another about werewolf mythology. It took a couple of episodes to really get me hooked, but now I can’t wait until the next season. Which unfortunately proabably means that it’ll get cancelled after this year 🙁

I’m hoping they do a lot more with character and storyline development this year, and really get into the personal stories of each of these people. And of course their cliffhanger of a season ender doesn’t hurt. No spoilers here, but I can’t wait to see what happens!
