I might get a little metaphysical here, but I’ve been having an interesting time writing my current Work In Progress. I’ve heard about authors and syncronicity, but I’ve never really had it happen to me before, and let me tell you, it’s giving me goosebumps!
Accoring to Wikipedia, synchronicity is the experience of two or more events which are causally unrelated occurring together in a supposedly meaningful manner. In order to count as synchronicity, the events should be unlikely to occur together by chance.
And let me tell you, when it happens, it always blows me away.
I start most of my stories with a rough outline and fill in the details as I go. In the past that’s meant lots of research when the story is over. But it’s all changed with this book. It’s my first paranormal romance, and it’s set in Dublin, Ireland, a place I’ve never been, unfortunately. I know very little about it’s neighborhoods or areas, and even less about it’s history. And yet, my very first google search led me to a little neighborhood called Harold’s Cross. Talk about the very place I needed! It contains one of the most beautiful Gothic cemeteries in Europe, a key part of the story. It was the place where hangings were done in the middle ages, which works perfectly with where I’m going with the story, and it’s a cute little neighborhood. It was exactly right!
Then I needed to know a little more about the Pope in about 1100 AD. And shock of all shocks, my first google search on that led me to the story of Pope Joan, the only female pope. And though the story has been pretty much debunked, what if it was true? Thus another key part of my story was born.
I’m about halfway through my first draft, and I’m astonished how things are falling into place, almost as if by magic! I’ve never had this happen before, and I have to say I’m loving it! It definitley makes me feel like I’m on the right path. And even those days when it almost hurts to drag the words out of me, I remember the little coincidences that have happened and plow through.
Gift from my muse? Merely cooincidence? Either way, I’m going to take what I can get and run with it for as long as it lasts!
Now I just need to be on the look out for the next story and hope the syncronicity continues!
Never even knew there was a female pope. Good luck with this one.
Me either! I was shocked to find out about her and I grew up catholic!
