Portlandia – The Dream of the 90’s

So the Other Half and I have been semi-seriously talking about moving out west for a while now and we’ve decided that Portland would be perfect for us. There’s a huge writing community (some of my favorite authors live there!) and a great brew-pub scene so there’d be something for both of us πŸ™‚ And the weather! Give me rain over snow any day! I might even be able to keep a garden alive. Ok, maybe not, but I can dream.

So when a friendΒ sent me this music video staring Fred Armisen from Saturday Night Live, I had to click the link. Come on – it’s called The Dream of The 90s is alive in Portland. How could I not?

You HAVE to watch this video. I think I fell out of my chair laughing.

Favorite. Line. Ever: Portland is the city where young people go to retire.

So then I finally caught a couple of episodes on IFC. And they were just as funny! Portland reminds me of where I live in a lot of ways, so it’s fun to see the same sorts of thinking and actions called out. One of the funniest skits was Put a Bird on it. In Portland, you can put a bird on it and call it art.

Might as well substitute Ann Arbor for Portland! SO True!!! I can think of half a dozen shops downtown that subscribe to the same philosophy!

I think this show has made me even more determined to move to Portland – I mean, who wouldn’t want to dress in flannel shirts and slack off at the local book store? Or make a living putting birds on things? Sounds like heaven to me!

Anyone out that way have a job for an author/tech writer and her computer tech boyfriend??? πŸ˜‰

  1. “I gave up clowing years ago.”

“In Portland, you don’t have to!”

  2. Clowning… dammit

  3. Ohhh, I’ve always loved the idea of living on the west coast (for the weather, nature, and laid back lifestyle), and you are right, there are soooooo many cool authors in that area!! Unfortunately I don’t know anyone there (jobwise), but good luck if you decide to go for it!

    • It’s just a dream right now, but some day!!! And of course, I’ve always wanted to live in Europe too – I spent a year there in college and would LOVE to go back permanently. It’s probably easier to get a job in the US tho πŸ™

  4. Portland Maine or Portland Oregon? I grew up around the Portland Oregon area. Trust me, nine months of rain gets old really fast. You couldn’t pay me enough to move back into that weather. But then, it worked out well for Mary Shelley. πŸ˜‰

  5. HA! You see how obsessed I am – Portland Maine didn’t even register πŸ™‚ Yes – we’re talking about Oregon. And I don’t mind the rain. Honestly, anything is better than 12 inches of snow at a time!

  6. LOL AAAAHH this explains too much about me (my Wonder Years were in the 90’s)

My fav part was the first 2 seconds when his friend walks out of her L.A. apartment wearing an awful velour track suit and Uggs. Sigh.

    • Me too! I was a total 90s child LOL! Glad I’m not the only one πŸ™‚
